Saddle Stitching

Saddle Stitching

Saddle stitching is the most commonly used type of binding in the production and finishing of printed booklets. The procedure requires folded sheets of printed material to be gathered together along with a cover and then two wire stitches are passed through the folded spine from the outside to the inside then stitched closed.

Typically only two wire stitches are used. Traditional stitching methods have the gathered sheets draped over a saddle like part of machinery at the point of stitching hence the name ‘saddle stitch’. More modern equipment for shorter runs or digitally produced work does not require the use of a saddle, however the name is still commonly used throughout the industry.

At Winter & Simpson our saddle stitching is produced by highly experienced staff on both conventional Muller stitching lines and more modern Duplo booklet makers.
